Commissioned for the Shanghai MoCa’s eighth anniversary exhibition, The party has started. is both festive and sharply critical. Confetti made from circles punched from newspapers lies piled on the floor. Heidi Voet’s heap is at once an anti-form sculptural work and a performative one. At 45 minutes throughout the show a guard would take a handful of confetti and throw it from the mezzanine back to the gallery below.
“recent history becomes reshuffled, dispersed and fragmented. The party has started. is both a cynical nod to an information-spewing society’s collective amnesia, but a gentle reminder that in China there is only one party.”
